The differences in compression and number of colors supported makes the two image formats suited for different applications:
- The JPEG format is suited to store digital photographs and colorful pictures (like the box-shot found on this page). The same pictures will display with "visual artifacts" if saved as GIF images;
- On the other hand the GIF format is suited to store images with a limited number of colors like the navigation and button images found on all web-sites. For those images the GIF format is a better alternative than JPEG since it produces a smaller file size.
